Fly fishing is an art that combines technique, precision, and a deep understanding of fish behavior. Every piece of equipment matters—from the rod and reel to the line and the fly. One often underestimated but extremely important component is the tippet. It is the tippet that makes the final connection between the angler and the fish. The tippet is the thin section of the leader that connects directly to the fly. It is the final segment of the line and plays a key role in presenting the lure as naturally as possible. The less visible the tippet is in the water, the greater the chance of not spooking the fish. A high-quality tippet is made from low-visibility materials, such as fluorocarbon or high-grade nylon. This is especially important when fishing for wary species like trout, which are easily spooked by anything out of the ordinary. A good leader combines finesse with exceptional strength. This means you can use a thinner diameter without sacrificing durability when fighting a fish. High-quality materials reduce the risk of breakage from sudden jerks or friction against rocks and obstacles. The elasticity of the tippet helps absorb the impact of a strike. This is especially important when fighting larger fish, where any sudden movement can cause the line to snap. A high-quality tippet provides a balance between stretch and control. One of the most important aspects of fly fishing is the natural movement of the fly. Poor-quality tippet can make the presentation unnatural—pulling or twisting the fly. High-quality tippet allows the lure to move freely and realistically. The tippet must withstand knots without significant loss of strength. With cheaper options, weakening is often observed precisely at the knot points, which can lead to lost fish. The choice between fluorocarbon and nylon depends on the conditions. Fluorocarbon is more invisible and sinks faster, making it ideal for nymphs and wet flies. Nylon, on the other hand, floats better and is often used with dry flies. The important thing is to choose a high-quality product, regardless of the material.
Match the line weight to the size of the fly
Choose the line strength based on the expected size of the fish
Take water clarity into account
Rely on proven brands and products
The tippet may seem like a small detail, but it is of immense importance for success in fly fishing. We born in 1997 but the story of Vision Fly Fishing really started in early 80’s when we started to import fishing tackle in Finland. We worked with many famous companies like Shakespeare, Bruce & Walker, Scott, G-Loomis, Partridge of Redditch and Scientific Anglers during the 1980-1990’s. We were really eager anglers working with a big heart and great passion for fly fishing. So naturally we had plenty of our own visions and thoughts how things could be done in Europe gear and tackle wise.In 1997 we shy Finns had mustered up courage and started doing things our own way. That was the day when our story started. Since 1997 we have pushed further in our own way. We have asked people to #JoinTheCult with us and after 25 years we feel that there was always a need and demand for one Kellokoski based passion project.
For years, tippet materials were marketed as being something they weren’t. The diameters, breaking strengths, and performance just weren’t accurate. Instead of throwing out some doubtful measured values, Scientific Anglers tested their new tippets conscientious and found them to be the strongest and most reliable they have ever created, with the highest knot strength of anything they tested. With up to 35% increased strength, you will experience a new level of SA Freshwater Nylon Tippet – and fish the truth.
TroutHunter Nylon is constructed with the highest quality co-polymers available. This unique blend is double coated for maximum knot reliability and water repellency providing the strongest break strength to diameter of any supple tippet material available. Trout Hunter Nylon is the choice when the situation demands exceptional presentation and performance.
